cremaster - infra - this CD is the first release by cremaster. a 4 track disc by the duo ferran fages and alfredo costa monteiro. each of the tracks is called infra followed by a number - infra 921, infra 444, infra 742, and infra 221 - initially i wondered if the numbers were some reference to the lengths of the track, but as infra 921 went past 10 minutes it became clear that this wasn't the case. much of the sound, i would assume, comes from the work of fages, who is credited as using a feedback mixing board. a fact which i would say comes through quite clearly in the resulting sound of this disc, a disc which is filled with sound which could largely be described as feedback. the range of the sound goes from minimal textural styled static to a sound which is undeniably noise, and harsh enough with that. fages also uses pick ups, which along with monteiro's use of "objects on electric guitar" i take to be the initial sound source for creating the feedback. there are times where the vibrations and clunks of sounds generated by objects on guitar are somewhat discernible. but like the bulk of the sound it provides a tactile result, rather than anything which someone could point out as being a guitar. personally i can quite enjoy some noise music, particularly of the more textural nature, which is where this release is at its best. overall the sound of cremaster might not be anything new, i've heard a number of releases playing in the same territory, but it certainly has its moments.
